Wherever you look these days, from commercials on television to magazines, diet plans and weight loss tips are everywhere. Even online the ads are flashing at you, telling you how you can lose weight if only you do this, or if only you do that. It can be confusing, not to mention depressing. What’s with the whole focus on being skinny?

It is true that being in good shape tends to mean being in good health. However, there is nothing wrong with having some shape to your body. Indeed, there are some good reasons for why we should avoid diets…

1. Generally, diets don’t work. When you feel you’re on a diet, all too often you’ll only start to crave exactly those foods you’re not allowed to touch. It’s like a universal law. You’re aware of what you shouldn’t eat, so you start to want it. Sooner or later, you’re likely to give in to this urge, and then you’ll be disappointed because you didn’t stick to your diet.

2. If you do manage to keep to your diet and lose quite a bit of weight, there will come a point where you feel you’ve done enough dieting. At this point it is easy to start eating those very items of food you tried to avoid during your diet, and because you haven’t allowed yourself to eat them for a while, you might start to gain weight again.

3. Extreme diets are unhealthy. We all need a variety of foods to maintain a healthy nutritional balance.

4. Don’t be tempted to simply not eat. This can lead to eating disorders, and eating disorders can be difficult to break free off. Nothing, and nobody, is worth starving yourself for.

5. We often start a diet for all the wrong reasons. We don’t have to look like supermodels. Realise that supermodels have imperfections, too. Those pictures you see in the magazines are usually touched up to make the model look superhumanly perfect.

Also, please realise that we all come in different shapes and sizes. If you’re not a natural size 0, why try forcing yourself to be one? Some women are naturally slim, some are curvy. It’s just the way life is, and there’s nothing wrong with it.

6. Dieting just to attract another person is not the best thing to do. If that person doesn’t like you the way you are, they are not worthy of you. I know that sounds easy, whilst really there are true feelings involved. That might well be the case. But if someone wants you to change just to suit them, there’s something wrong. If they don’t like the way you look, it’s not likely to last.

Again, nobody is worth starving yourself for.

7. Breakfast bars and weight loss meals are not the be all and end all of healthy food.

8. Weight loss does not come from dieting alone. It comes from a balance of food and exercise.

9. Quite often you will find that you’re actually eating less than you should, instead of eating too much!

10. You do not have to be thin to be a good person. Who you are is not defined by your looks, or whether or not you have a good hair day, or what clothes you happen to be wearing. You are you, and you are wonderful just the way you are.

If you do need or wish to lose some weight, the natural way is always the best one. Try to eat often, but make sure the portions are reasonable and made up of a healthy variety of food. Don’t force yourself to empty your plate - if your body tells you you are satisfied it’s time to stop.

Try to get some exercise. You don’t need to go to the gym for this - even a half an hour walk a day will do wonders for your health and body shape.

If you need to lose a lot of weight for health reasons, it is best to ask your doctor for advice. He or she will help you decide the best route to take. This advice will be better than that of all the people with books on the shelves, or advertisements on the television. This is because your doctor knows you, and your personal circumstances.
